Calligraphy Practice Blog 2: Robbie Burns

It’s Day 2! I’m slowly preparing my home environment to host my soon-to-be calligraphy habit. Currently, my shoulders are shrugged a little because my dining table is a bit too high for proper writing posture, but I did get a little project done today on this table! I went to Michael’s and bought the Manuscript fountain pen which includes 5 different nib lengths using a coupon I found online saving me a big 7 dollars!

I have my graph paper, my new pens, music, and a kitty cat. Ahhhh so sooothing and relaxing.

What I worked on today:

1. Assembling the fountain pen. (It took me a good 15 minutes to get the pen started)
2. Holding the pen at a 5 degree angle.
3. Used a ladder or a checkerboard to guide my height and level of my letters.
3. Used Maryanne Grebenstein’s Calligraphy book and borrowed the “Lombardic” font to practice.
4. Chose a light poem by the great poet, Robert Burns.

What I learned:
1. Having all the tools and environment is key to great calligraphy.
2. Holding the pen at the right angle really makes a difference.
3. The terms, ascender and descender, for guidelines.

What are your best exercise for practice?

Sincerely,

Dandelion Traveler
